On Thursday, March 29, 2018 after battling cancer, Gary F. Winters, of Oklahoma City, went to be with His Savior in heaven. Gary was born on January 24, 1946 in San Antonio, TX to his parents Fenton “Greg” Winters and Marian Louise Winters. He was a quiet, but kind older brother to his siblings Gail, Glenn, Scott, and Darla. He moved to Norman, OK at age 12 and graduated from Norman High School in 1964. Afterwards he attended the University of Oklahoma where he “crammed four years of learning into nine.” While at college, a friend introduced him to Jesus and he began a personal relationship with Christ. Shortly afterward, he met, fell in love with, and married Peggy Swinney on August 5, 1972.  Gary had various jobs over the years including: milkman, garbage man, pizza delivery man, Pepsi truck driver, newspaper delivery man, men’s wear salesman, electronics salesman, English teacher, and, most often, accountant.  A lover of sports, he was a lifelong LA Dodger’s, Dallas Cowboy’s, and OU fan.  In recent years, he took up fishing and enjoyed the fellowship time with other anglers. Jobs and sports aside, his greatest devotion was to the Lord and his family.  Many people and several churches contributed to his spiritual growth after salvation.  In 1980 he and Peggy became charter members of Heritage Baptist and served there continuously.  Gary enjoyed teaching elementary boys in AWANA when his own kids were young and also found fulfilment in helping families get their finances in order through Financial Peace University.  He served as a deacon. Committed to missions, Gary and Peggy raised their children with a missions worldview and enjoyed mission trips to Peru, China, and Bosnia.  He was dedicated to international student ministry and their kids were not surprised, but certainly proud, when Gary and Peggy chose to serve in China for two years during their retirement years.  Raising his four children, Tiffany, Melody, Ben, and Clay, in the Lord was probably Gary’s greatest accomplishment and delight. He and Peggy sacrificed financially in order to homeschool their brood and used that time to teach them of the Lord. His kids often found him reading his Bible and praying for them. Gary faithfully attended choir concerts, ball games, award ceremonies, band concerts, and many other activities to show his support of his children’s endeavours.  He enjoyed getting to know his sons-in-law Sladan and Jeremy and daughter-in-law Ashlyn too.  More recently, his greatest joy was found in his grandchildren Evan 7, Lukas 5, Abby 3, and Ruby 1.  No one else could make him chuckle and smile like they could.  After returning to OKC from China in 2015, Gary began his struggle with melanoma.  His family is grateful that his final days of suffering were short and that he did what he set out to do which was to “finish well.”

He is preceded in death by his parents “Greg” and Louise Winters and his brother Glenn Winters. He is survived by his wife Peggy of 45 years. Daughter Tiffany Kavedzic and her husband Sladan and sons Evan and Lukas. Daughter Melody Heinz and her husband Jeremy and daughters Abigail and Ruby. Son Ben and his wife Ashlyn. Son Clay. Sister Gail Winters. Brother Gregory Scott Winters. Sister Darla Gustafson and many nieces and nephews.
